Shiva once challenged Vishnu and Brahma to reach the farthest edge of his enormous body to help them settle their dispute over who was superior. While Brahma attempted to utilize a Ketaki flower that had fallen from Shiva’s head as evidence that he had reached the head, Vishnu was unable to find his feet.

The story of the ketki flower

Lord Shiva claims that Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu once got into a fight. According to Lord Brahma, who claimed to have created the entire world, he is the greatest. However, Lord Vishnu began claiming that since he is the one who upholds and guards the entire planet, he is the best. As a result of the commotion their argument generated, an astrological column appeared between them. There was a voice in the sky saying that the biggest person is the one who finds their ends first.

Lord Vishnu moved forward while Lord Brahma moved backward. However, neither was able to unravel it, and they both came back empty-handed. Brahma began to lie to Lord Vishnu when Vishnu told him the truth about his failure. Brahma claimed that after reaching the finish, he returned. As a witness, Brahma offered the white Ketaki flower.

Lord Shiva then materialized there, furious at the falsehood. He claimed to be the oldest and the only person to have known both the beginning and the end. Ketki’s falsehoods infuriated Shiva, who cursed him so that he would never be a part of their worship. Brahma was jointly cursed so that he would not be revered or have a temple anywhere.

How does the Ketaki tree look and when does it bloom?

When Sawan or the rainy season arrives, the ketki flower is frequently in bloom. It is possible to tell from a distance that there is a Ketaki tree in that region because of the fragrant blossom that grows on the Ketaki plant. And it resembles a palm tree almost exactly and its maximum length, or 12 feet, is 4 meters.

The Ketaki tree has branches that resemble palm trees and a flexible trunk that is held upright by roots. Its glossy leaves range in length from 40 to 70 cm and have a blue-green tint. At the terminals of the branches, they develop in clusters that resemble swords. According to legend, Ketki was brought from India to Yemen, where it is mostly used to create perfumes.

Why isn’t Lord Shiva given the Ketaki flower?

The deities are supplied with just their preferred materials. However, Lord Shiva, the God of Gods, is the sole God to whom various offerings are made. They are never given Ketaki flowers, unlike Kamalgatta, Datura, Bilpatra, and Shamipatra. It should never, not even accidentally, be offered to Lord Shiva. The explanation for this can be found in a Shiva Purana narrative. According to the legend, Lord Vishnu and Brahma once engaged in combat over who was the best of them all.
